Scope Creep
The gradual expansion of project scope beyond the original agreement, usually without additional compensation.
Scope creep is when a project gradually expands beyond what was originally agreed — additional features, extra revisions, new requirements — without a corresponding increase in budget or timeline. It's the single most common source of freelancer frustration and client disputes. It rarely happens all at once. It's a slow drip: "Can you also..." and "While you're at it..." and "One more small thing."
Scope creep isn't always the client's fault. Often it's caused by a vague statement of work that doesn't clearly define boundaries. If your proposal says "website design," the client might reasonably expect copywriting, SEO setup, and hosting migration to be included. If you meant "visual design mockups only," that should be spelled out.
Prevention is straightforward: define scope with extreme specificity in your proposal, list explicit exclusions ("does not include..."), specify the number of revision rounds included, and establish a change request process. When the client asks for something outside scope, respond with: "That's outside the current scope. I can add it for ₹X and Y additional days. Want me to send a revised quote?"
The change request process is your best defense. Any addition to the original scope should be documented in writing (even a simple email confirmation), priced separately, and approved before work begins. This isn't about being rigid — it's about making sure everyone agrees on what's being traded for what.
A well-structured proposal with clear scope boundaries, exclusion lists, and change request clauses prevents 90% of scope creep before it starts.
